What Happens When You're Forced to Disconnect

I've been in the Philippines visiting my parents this week which I am calling a pseudo-vacation. You don't really get time off when you work for yourself and I'm okay with that.

I am putting in 6-7 hour days here which, I have quickly realized, have been far more productive than the hours that I put in at the office.  Why? Because when the US is fast asleep, noone is emailing me or calling me with the next distraction or fire to put out. I begin my workday when the rest of the world is wrapping up, giving me that hour or two of overlap where I can do the necessary back and forth. And then for the rest of the day, I am literally being forced to focus. It's a beautiful thing.

I return to California next week and will return to the grind, but not without a few changes.

You see, I have always claimed to be exceptional at managing my time, but I have also fallen victim to the need to be constantly connected. It's a reminder that it's not just ok, but a necessity to turn off the distractions - even for an hour at a time, so that I can produce my best work.

The question is, will I be able to disconnect?
